Our open letter.
It is written that we are all made in his image… and yet, we continue to see our brothers and sisters falling victim to injustice day after day, year after year. This is more than a trending topic, this is a result of systems that have been designed unfairly for centuries. I don’t know what you believe, but… surely you believe no matter the colour of one’s complexion, we deserve the same opportunities.
Surely you believe it could break a man’s heart when in an attempt to build a comfortable life for his family, three police cars trail him on his way to work, just because his complexion doesn’t match those around him (this didn’t happen in the US, but in Kent, the ‘Garden of England’).
Surely you believe there’s something wrong when our schools talk about black history but it begins with the slave trade. What about the civilisations and communities we built that inspired those of Rome?
Surely you believe we are teaching prejudice when we continue to label some as thugs, animals and barbaric, but others as ‘just a few bad apples’.
Surely you believe there’s something wrong with our society if some have to contemplate changing their surname, just to get a seat at the table.
Surely you believe one’s life shouldn’t be cut short because the colour of their skin ‘matches a description’.
Surely you believe, something is wrong with the world when someone is refused their right to simply breathe.
Surely you believe, that some of us are tired, speechless, angry and frustrated because we are still wondering when will they truly understand, when will this stop.
